CHANEL Ceramic

Introduction

To create the iconic J12 in 2000, CHANEL adopted an avant-garde approach and selected a revolutionary material that made it possible to produce an intensely black watch. Extremely durable and scratch-proof, seven times more resistant than steel, light and soft to the touch, ceramic is among the emblematic materials in CHANEL Watchmaking.

Ceramic work

Manufacturing entirely managed by CHANEL

The CHANEL Watch Manufacture oversees the complete production process of the ceramic. Since the launch of the J12, the men and women in this department have acquired unparalleled expertise, which is applied at every stage of the ceramic component fabrication for CHANEL Watches.

Raw materials

01
On06

To make the highly resistant ceramic, CHANEL chooses top-quality minerals in powder form that, through an exclusive method, result in the CHANEL Watches signature black and white colours. A precisely measured formula guarantees absolute reliability of the raw material.

Injection

02
On06

The raw material is placed in a mould, and then a combination of heat and pressure is applied to give the piece its basic shape. CHANEL engineers take many factors into account to ensure the success of this operation, which is essential to the uniformity and quality of the ceramic.

Debinding

03
On06

This step consists of eliminating the agent used to bind the raw material and enable injection.

Sintering

04
On06

During this stage, the particles are subjected to very high temperatures, fusing them together to give the ceramic its remarkable properties.

Machining

05
On06

After cooling and robotic transport, CHANEL experts refine the piece’s rough shape and create the final silhouette through a series of mechanical processes, a step that requires extreme precision.

Polishing

06

The last stage of production involves smoothing and polishing the ceramic piece to make it shiny and incomparably smooth. The black is intense, the white, dazzling.
