Care and maintenance

CHANEL places the utmost importance on the quality of the materials with which each timepiece is created. Special care and maintenance will allow your watch function properly for longer and revive the luster of each creation.

Automatic watches

An automatic watch should be manually wound after an inactive period of about three weeks to avoid the oil in the movement from drying out.

Mechanical automatic watches self-wind due to the movement of the wrist. An ill-fitting bracelet may result in a reduction in autonomy, so it is essential that your watch bracelet be correctly sized. When not worn, the watch will need to be manually wound to ensure a full power reserve with a maximum of 42 hours.

Although mechanical movements are fitted with the means to absorb shock, they are still relatively fragile. It is therefore recommended to avoid wearing your watch while undertaking high-impact activities — such as playing golf or tennis — where repeated shocks may deregulate or even damage the watch mechanism.

Quartz watches

We recommend changing a run down battery immediately to avoid leakages that may irreversibly damage the movement.

Cleaning Your Watch

WATCHES WITH CERAMIC OR METAL BRACELETS

Always check that the crown is well pushed in and/or screwed down. Clean with soapy water and rinse well. Dry with a soft cloth.

WATCHES WITH RUBBER BRACELETS

Always check that the crown is well pushed in and/or screwed down. Clean with soapy water and rinse well. Dry with a soft cloth.

WATCHES WITH WHITE RUBBER BRACELETS

In the case of persistent marks such as dye stains and ingrained dirt, clean with warm water and baking soda. If necessary, lightly scrub with a medium to soft brush.

WATCHES WITH LEATHER OR SATIN STRAPS

Polish your strap using a soft cloth.

The Water-Resistance of Your Watch

WHAT IS WATER-RESISTANCE?

Water-resistance refers to the protection of each watch’s mechanism against water and dust. To ensure optimal water-resistance, we recommend having the protective seals in your timepiece replaced every two years.

The water pressure on the crystal increases as the watch is immersed to a greater depth. The pressure of the air inside the watch case counteracts some of the external pressure.

The majority of CHANEL watches are water-resistant. This feature is engraved on the the back of each case.

RECOMENDATIONS FOR OPTIMAL WATER-RESISTANCE

Hot water

A watch must never be worn in a sauna, a shower or a bath as hot water may damage its water-resistance seals.

Sea water

If your watch is exposed to salt water, rinse the timepiece with fresh water to prevent the salt from damaging water-resistance seals.

Watches with swrew-down crowns

If your watch has a screw-down crown, like some J12 timepieces, ensure the crown is tightly sealed before contact with water.

All About Magnetization

WHAT IS MAGNETIZATION?

In watchmaking, magnetization refers to the negative effect of magnetic fields on the functioning of a watch. Magnetic fields are commonly found with objects we use in everyday life, including smart phones, digital tablets, induction cooktops, speakers and televisions.

WHAT EFFECT DOES MAGNETIZATION HAVE ON WATCHES?

When a watch encounters a magnetic field, the movement may be disrupted, causing it to accelerate or stop completely. Automatic watch movements are more susceptible to magnetization than watches with a quartz movement. An automatic movement may cease to function correctly if magnetization causes certain metallic parts — such as the balance spring and barrel spring — to stick together. In most cases, the watch will work normally as soon as it is removed from the magnetic field. However, if it has been exposed to a high-intensity magnetic field for more than 15 minutes*, the effects of magnetization may be more lasting. As a result, your watch may continue to run too fast.

The majority of CHANEL watches are water-resistant. This feature is engraved on the the back of each case.

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR WATCH FROM MAGNETIZATION

We recommend that you keep your watch more than 10 cm away from any object that emits a high-intensity magnetic field.

WHAT CAN YOU DO IF MAGNETIZATION OCCURS?

To detect if the watch is magnetized, place it next to a compass. If it is magnetized, the compass hands will spin erratically. To demagnetize your watch, visit a CHANEL boutique or CHANEL-authorized dealer of your choice.

One after-sales service team will neutralize the effects of magnetization by exposing it to an alternating magnetic field. This will restore proper functioning of the timepiece.

How often should your watch be serviced?

Quartz Automatic
Battery Life 2 to 4 years according to model
Time between revisions 4 to 5 years 4 to 5 years
Time between Each resistance Check 2 years

Diagnosing a problem with your watch

Does your watch show the following warning signs? Consult the relevant section for information on causes and possible solutions.

YOUR WATCH HAS STOPPED

QUARTZ WATCH

Two possible causes:

  • he battery is depleted: a replacement battery is needed.
  • The watch movement is damaged (leaking battery, water infiltration, etc...). Full servicing will restore it to working order./li>
AUTOMATIC WATCH

Try winding your watch manually. If it still does not start, there are two possible reasons:

YOUR WATCH IS RUNNING FAST OR SLOW

QUARTZ WATCH

The movement is damaged, full servicing is required.

AUTOMATIC WATCH

Two possible causes:

  • Your watch has been magnetized and the movement needs to be regulated. Servicing is required.
  • The oil in the movement has dried or the movement is dirty or damaged by a shock or water infiltration. Full servicing will restore it to working order.

MIST HAS FORMED UNDER THE CRYSTAL OF YOUR WATCH

Water has infiltrated the movement: full servicing is required.

Please take your watch to a CHANEL boutique or to an authorized CHANEL retailer of your choice. Your watch will be sent to our workshops for a detailed examination.
