In looking at this pool of nominees, what are some of the qualities you’re struck by? What is distinctive about this group?

It’s a remarkable group to launch this prize. They are all incredibly responsive artists, they already have had a legacy of ducking and diving. This prize will not only shine a light on them as individuals but on them as a group — a portrait of a time.

What do you think is next?

I hope there’s going to be more “what’s next” rather than what “has been”. I think that all sorts of scales have fallen from our eyes in recent times, and that can only be a good thing for culture, and can only be a good thing for artists - because that’s our song.
