KARL LAGERFELD
& NEW YORK

"In New York, I like the energy, the air, the people, the architecture, the confusion, the mix.’’ — Karl Lagerfeld
The Art Director of the House has always been inspired by the city that hosted several CHANEL's fashion shows and exhibitions.

In 2005, Karl Lagerfeld presented the Métiers d’art collection in the CHANEL boutique of 57th Street. Two years later, the Cruise collection was set at the Grand Central Station, an iconic Manhattan location. New Yorkers have also had the opportunity to discover Karl Lagerfeld's work through exhibitions organized in the city. In the fall of 2008, the ‘Mobile Art’ pavillion created by architect Zaha Hadid upon Karl Lagerfeld's invitation, stopped by in Central Park. In 2012, the traveling exhibition ‘The Little Black Jacket’ was presented in SoHo, highlighting the House's icon.

Whether set on the Fifth Avenue, in Harlem or Brooklyn, the city has also often served as a backdrop to the CHANEL campaigns under Karl Lagerfeld's lens. The endless streets, iron balconies, red brick façades, traffic lights and street signs — these elements have all nourished the creator's imagination, inspiring him to associate CHANEL with this urban landscape.

This year, the city of New York once again inspired him. The Paris-New York 2018/19 Métiers d’art collection will be unveiled at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on December 4th.

LOGNON
PLEATER SINCE 1853

The Maison Lognon marries traditional craft skills and digital technology with cutting-edge techniques. Its deft-fingered experts create elaborate interplays of volume in flat expanses of fabric in a highly demanding process that requires painstaking accuracy and detailed knowledge of the characteristics of each material. Perfect pleating takes unspoken coordination and perfect fingertip synchronization from two pleaters working together.

LEMARIÉ
FEATHER AND FLOWER MAKER
SINCE 1880

Founded by Palmyre Coyette, the House of Lemarié has existed since 1880. An expert in flowers and feathers, Lemarié also excels at ‘couture’ (incrustations, ruffles, sophisticated smocking…) and the creation of pleats. The House is an essential partner for the ten annual CHANEL collections by Karl Lagerfeld and joined CHANEL’s Métiers d’art in 1996.

WORLD'S FAIR IN 1939

CHANEL is among the French representatives of the Couture and Perfumery at the New York World’s Fair in 1939. Within the French pavilion, the House presents a sculpture with objects placed behind crystal windows, evoking the signature lines of its creations.

The next Métiers d’art collection will be presented in New York on December 4th.
