The flower of CHANEL

The story of CHANEL and the white camellia first began when Mademoiselle Chanel pinned a white camellia to a belt in 1913. It comes as no surprise that this flower's simplicity, graphic shape, purity and resilient vivacity (the camellia can even blossom in winter) appealed to Mademoiselle Chanel. She made the camellia her favorite flower: a symbol.

CHANEL scientists were intrigued by the camellia's ability to withstand winter frost. After extensive research on several camellia varieties in the laboratory, CHANEL discovered that Camellia alba plena produces extraordinarily hydrating active molecules.

Southwestern France possesses ideal conditions for camellia cultivation. The partnership between CHANEL and master botanist Jean Thoby began in 1998.

HARVESTED BY HAND

Blooming in winter, the unscented white camellia is a resilient plant. Its white flowers, however, are delicate and have to be picked by hand. The nursery holds close to one hundred camellia trees, all tended to with the utmost attention and infinite care. Given the plant’s winter bloom, seasonality is key in the natural cultivation practiced here.

The flowers are picked one at a time and placed in baskets, avoiding any possible deterioration. As soon as they are weighed, the flowers are frozen to preserve 100% of the active ingredients before being sent to the laboratory.

“Everything is done here in synergy with nature. She's in charge.”

— Jean Thoby

DROP BY DROP

To preserve the precious active ingredients, CHANEL uses the microfluidic technology. This revolutionary technology, which makes it possible to create micro-droplets of active ingredients inside a formula, is at the origin of the HYDRA BEAUTY line.

Camellia micro-droplets instantly become one with the skin. On application, each drop releases all the hydrating and replenishing power of Camellia alba plena extract.
