Since 2002, CHANEL dedicates a collection each year to its Métiers d’art houses, maintaining an artistic, technical and cultural heritage in constant effervescence. In a creative dialogue between the Studio and the artisans, the twenty-seven Maisons d’art and manufacturers united under the name of ‘Paraffection’ contribute to the influence of French luxury and fashion around the world.

Karl Lagerfeld turned to the rich and abundant cultural touchstones of ancient Egypt as the inspiration for the latest Métiers d’art collection, employing the scarab beetle throughout as the season’s leitmotif. The sacred amulet appeared on buttons, belts and much of the audacious jewellery — like this slender yet graphic 24-carat gold cuff. Forged by Gabrielle Chanel\'s original jeweler and creative accomplice, the Paris - New York collection marks the first time the House has collaborated with the jewellery atelier since Chanel’s tenure.

The dazzling and elaborate embellishment on this ruched organza dress lights up like fireworks exploding across the night sky. Great care is taken with this design: first it was marked out on tracing paper and then hand-appliqued over 480 hours. Composed from 47,000 sequins, in brilliant hues of gold, turquoise and coral, and 150 cabochons hand made by the jewellery maison of Goossens. Once the work was finished, the CHANEL ateliers assembled it into this dress.

Weaving together the past and present, the bold and iconic imagery of New York City and the ancient antiquities provided Karl Lagerfeld with abundant creative zeal for the latest Métiers d’art collection. This awe-inspiring collar was modelled on an original CHANEL art deco necklace, but it also cleverly recalls both the glittering Manhattan skyline and the dazzling ornaments beloved by the Kings and Queens of Ancient Egypt. Fashioned from 1500 brightly coloured rhinestones, each stone has been meticulously soldered on one-by-one.

It took a whole team of artisans from the storied feather house of Lemarié over 1000 hours to realise the vibrant and elaborate featherwork on this dress. Working with a canvas, much like a visual artist, the ‘plumassiers’ created the graphic, geometric motif from a composition of individual feathers, which were dyed brilliant shades of turquoise, red, navy and black, or hand-painted illustrious gold, before they were carefully hand cut and assembled onto black organza, line-by-line.
