Ho Tzu Nyen
비주얼 아티스트
싱가포르에서 태어나 활동 중인 Ho Tzu Nyen은 애니메이션과 영상, 퍼포먼스, 그리고 설치 분야를 망라하는 작품 활동을 하고 있습니다. 그는 각종 전설과 역사를 차용하고 재해석하여 현실과 이야기가 구성되는 방식을 탐구합니다.
대부분의 작품은 과거 영국의 식민지였지만 현재는 여러 문화가 한데 모여 살아가고 있는 섬나라, 싱가포르와 관련이 있습니다. Ho Tzu Nyen는 이후 싱가포르에서 눈을 돌려 동남아시아와 동아시아 문화의 전설과 역사로 작품을 제작하기 시작했습니다.
그는 이렇게 전합니다. “제 예술 작품이 다음에 어떤 무대에 등장할지는 아직 알 수 없습니다. 하지만 이번 수상을 통해 더욱 많은 역량을 발휘할 수 있게 되어 기쁩니다.”
그는 제54회 베네치아 비엔날레(La Biennale di Venezia)에 싱가포르 대표로 참가했습니다. 더불어, 2021년 일본 도요타 시립 미술관(Toyota Municipal Museum of Art), 2021년 일본 야마구치 정보예술센터(Yamaguchi Centre for Arts and Media), 2018년 독일 함부르크 쿤스트페어라인(Kunstverein Hamburg), 2015년 스페인 빌바오 구겐하임 뮤지엄(Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao), 2012년 도쿄 모리 미술관(Mori Art Museum)에서 각각 개인전을 선보였습니다.
2023년에는 그가 걸어온 약 20년의 작품 세계를 엿볼 수 있는 서베이 전시 ‘Ho Tzu Nyen: Time & the Tiger’가 싱가포르 아트 뮤지엄(Singapore Art Museum)에서 공개되었습니다. 이 서베이 전시는 올해 서울 아트선재센터(Art Sonje Center)와 뉴욕 헤셀 미술관(Hessel Museum of Art)을 거쳐 2025년 룩셈부르크의 무담 현대 미술관(Mudam Contemporary Art Museum)에서 다시 한번 대중에게 모습을 드러낼 예정입니다. 2024년 4월에는 그의 개인전 ‘A for Agent’를 도쿄도 현대 미술관(Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo)에서 만나볼 수 있습니다.
그는 이렇게 전합니다. “CHANEL Next Prize는 제게 힘을 주었습니다. 다음 단계로 나아갈 수 있는 용기를 불어넣어 주었죠.”
