Operation explanations

CLEANING OF THE PIECE

Each piece of jewellery is carefully cleaned with soft brushes and specially adapted tools. If the nature of the stone allows, the CHANEL Jewellery workshops will use ultrasound waves to clean the less accessible parts.

*Certain stones such as emeralds, tanzanites and pearls are excluded, as they are too delicate for ultrasound waves.

DIAGNOSIS OF THE PIECE

Jewellers carefully study each piece of jewellery in order to determine which intervention should be carried out.

RE-SIZING

Different techniques exist regarding the re-sizing of CHANEL Fine Jewellery pieces. Sales associates are at your disposal to give you advice and recommend the most adapted technique.

PEARL RE-STRINGING

After being carefully cleaned, pearls are strung one by one on a new silk thread.

For most of its creations, CHANEL Fine Jewellery will use the knot stringing method. This technique limits friction between pearls and keeps them from being lost if the silk thread breaks.

SETTING CHECK

At each intervention, all the gem settings on the piece of jewellery are meticulously examined. Every damaged setting is replaced in order to avoid losing a stone.

POLISHING OF GOLD ELEMENTS/REMOVAL OF THE LAYER OF RHODIUM ON WHITE GOLD ELEMENTS

Every white gold piece of jewellery is covered by a thin layer of rhodium to perfect the finishing and enhance its brilliance. This layer of rhodium is removed by means of polishing. Polishing is a technique also used for gold and platinum pieces of jewellery in order to reduce scratches. Polishers use brushes and rollers soaked with polishing paste (clay grains), used one after the other to obtain a perfectly polished finish. Due to polishing, a slight layer of material is removed.

Thus, it is a delicate operation that requires a specific know-how. Successive polishing can alter the surface condition and edges of your piece of jewellery. We recommend that you do not request this service frequently (a maximum of 3 times during the course of its life is recommended).

RHODIUM PLATING OF WHITE GOLD ELEMENTS

After having removed the old layer of rhodium, the piece of jewellery is immersed in a rhodium-bath resulting in a new layer that will revive the brilliance and whiteness of white gold.

CHECK OF THE PIECE

Before leaving the workshop, your piece of jewellery is carefully examined to ensure it meets the CHANEL Fine Jewellery high quality standards.
