Convinced that books shape our vision of the world and help us forge our independence, CHANEL has created the Literary Rendezvous at Rue Cambon in 2021, imagined with House ambassador and spokesperson Charlotte Casiraghi. Bringing together women writers and friends of the House to discuss their own works or those of major literary figures, these conversations aim at communicating the passion for literature and shedding light to its transformative power. Literary questionnaires, dives into the libraries of personalities close to the House and Charlotte Casiraghi's reading recommendations extend those exchanges.
Keen to encourage literary vocations, the Literary Rendezvous at Rue Cambon also highlight first-time female novelists with the podcast "les Rencontres", such as Abigail Assor, Rachel Eliza Griffiths, Alice Renard and Cecile Pin. In line with this commitment, CHANEL is supporting the creation of the Nouvel Obs Literary Prize, which will be awarded in June 2025 to an emerging author to enable her to write her second novel.
"You have to find freedom." Gabrielle Chanel conquered hers through literature. From her childhood spent alone at the Aubazine orphanage to the intimacy of her apartment on the rue Cambon, books have never left her side, and she once confided: "I learned about life from novels". Throughout her life, she has surrounded herself with the writers, poets and women of letters of her time: Colette, Pierre Reverdy, Jean Cocteau, Raymond Radiguet, Max Jacob, Marthe Bibesco or Louise de Vilmorin. Today, the House of CHANEL continues to weave and strengthen its links with contemporary authors. With them, she explores the power of words to nourish our imagination and set us in motion. Literature undoubtedly stimulated Gabrielle Chanel's profound desire for emancipation, the impetus that led her to free women's bodies and invent a new allure.
Since their creation, the Literary Rendezvous at Rue Cambon has had the honour to welcome writers Leïla Slimani, Camille Laurens, Chantal Thomas, Jeanette Winterson, Siri Hustvedt, Anne Berest, Léonora Miano, Marie NDiaye, Maria Pourchet and Rachel Cusk.
Each new episode of the programme is available to everyone online.
