DANCE AS THE ART OF MOVEMENT
AND A METAPHOR FOR FREEDOM

Celebrating its lively and eternal links with CHANEL and the world of dance, CHANEL imagined the costumes for Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui’s contemporary choreographic creation ‘Exposure’, set to music by Woodkid. In a black and white setting evoking the atmosphere of a photography studio, the costumes embody the essence of the CHANEL allure. Fluid and pure, they highlight each gesture, playing a role in the choreography.

PRECISION AND MOVEMENT
OPENING GALA COSTUMES

For the ‘Grand Pas Classique’ ballet inaugurating the 2021 dance season of the Opéra de Paris, each element of the costumes has been embroidered by hand in the ateliers at the House of Lesage, one of CHANEL’s Métiers d’art. The feminine silhouette is composed of a bustier in midnight blue silk velvet and a rigid tutu in black tulle expressly imprinted with a shade of deep blue and embroidered with a constellation of sequins, beads and strass, evoking a star-lit sky. These celestial and poetic motifs also illuminate the masculine outfit, composed of an elegant doublet in embroidered velvet.

CHANEL AND DANCE
OPENING GALA OF THE OPÉRA DE PARIS

For the first performance of the 2021 dance season, the costumes of the two Étoile dancers Valentine Colasante and Hugo Marchand have been created especially by CHANEL under the direction of Virginie Viard. Celestial and poetic motifs, delicately embroidered by hand in the ateliers at the House of Lesage, illuminate both feminine and masculine silhouettes. The two dreamlike costumes renew the timeless magic of the famous pas de deux Grand Pas Classique, choreographed by Victor Gsovsky.

CHANEL
PATRON OF THE PARIS OPERA BALLET

Dance is at the heart of CHANEL’s heritage: friend and patron of Serge Diaghilev, the Ballets russes founder, Gabrielle Chanel put her vision to the service of dance by creating costumes for several ballets, including ‘Le Train Bleu’ in 1924.

Patron of the Opening Gala of the Opéra national de Paris dance season since 2018, CHANEL reaffirms its support of the institution by becoming the patron of the Paris Opera Ballet. This partnership between two Houses united by the same values of excellence and creation aims to support all of the artistic projects of the Opéra de Paris.
