Shanghai, Huangpu River, December 3rd, 2009. The set of the show: the Pudong skyline. “We cannot rebuild it so we made a boat with a set where you can see Shanghai. It’s a black crystal box with a view on Shanghai.” explains Karl Lagerfeld.
As a prelude, Karl Lagerfeld's film. Screens disappear and reveal a panoramic view of the Pudong skyscrapers.
Karl Lagerfeld revisits the Eastern Empire: “China has always been present in art, decoration, statues, Coromandel screens. The French have always liked Chinese art and all that side of the world has been really inspiring for decoration in Europe since the 17th and 18th century.”
The collection brings together the expert skill of the Parisian artisans and the Chanel ateliers: “The strength of the collection results from its refinement. You need to have a close look and almost feel the fabric to understand how it was made and to appreciate the know how.” Karl Lagerfeld.

“PARIS-SHANGHAI: A FANTASY” THE TRIP THAT COCO CHANEL ONLY MADE IN HER DREAMS
A SHORT MOVIE BY KARL LAGERFELD
1950’s, Paris: Coco Chanel is having tea with her friend, the Duchess of Windsor, who tells her about her adventures in China, a country Coco has never visited. Once her friend has left, Coco falls asleep on her sofa. She dreams of China, a fantastic and surreal place, blending her friend's souvenirs with memorable scenes from Classics of the 30s where she encounters their protagonists.
Chanel has opened a new boutique in Shanghai. The store, which covers an area of 480 m2, has been designed by New York architect Peter Marino. Its intimate interior design gives the feel of a private apartment, with different rooms each with their own warm, relaxing ambiance, where works of art and furniture inspired by the Coco Chanel style are elegantly displayed alongside clothing, accessories and jewelry. “We wanted to create a showroom in which customers can take a seat in one of our comfortable sofa-style armchairs and be treated to the very best in customer service”, explains the architect.
