NEW BOND STREET BOUTIQUE
COLLIER CASCADE BY OTHONIEL

Jean-Michel Othoniel lives and works in Paris. Othoniel views each sculpture as a new challenge; an invitation to further explore the possibilities offered by matter and shape. With this commission, he saw a unique chance to echo the spirit of Chanel on a monumental scale and in an architectural way. Inspired by the strands of pearls Coco Chanel made so famous, Othoniel chose to interlace glass beads in shades of grey, black and silver, to create his largest hanging necklace sculpture to date. Seen partly from the ground floor, Collier Cascade surprises the visitor with its grand scale, vertiginously rising 11 meters to the full height of the stairwell. Collier Cascade seems to be moved by a perpetual, but unseen flow, frozen in the memory of a movement. Playing with reflection and sinuous curves, the necklace binds and unbinds itself in a complex landscape, infinitely multiplied by the mirrored base on which it seems to be floating. Othoniel's designs are in Chanel boutiques worldwide including Shenyang, China, the Chanel Ginza Tower in Tokyo, the Prince's Building in Hong Kong, the Peninsula Hotel in Shanghai, the Peninsula Hotel in Beijing, in Beverly Hills and on Avenue Montaigne in Paris.

SUMMER AGENDA
EXHIBITION IN NEW YORK

Punk: Chaos to Couture, organized by The Costume Institute of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, examines punk’s impact on high fashion from the movement’s birth in the 1970s through its continuing influence today. The exhibition is on view until August 14th at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

In his introduction to the exhibition the curator Andrew Bolton emphasizes the similarities between Couture and Punk: “I think what's interesting about the relationship between punk and high fashion or couture is the fact that both really rely on hand-crafted skills for the aesthetic. So in a way, punk clothing is like haute couture - usually only one person in the world would be wearing a jacket that was self-customized by the individual. Even though the aesthetic is often widely different between haute couture and punk, the ethos behind it can be very similar.” He concludes: “Once you walk through the exhibition, hopefully you'll realize how punk has had such an explosive effect, both on the music styles and fashion today, but also as an approach to culture in general.”

The poster of the exhibition features a jacket designed by Karl Lagerfeld for the Chanel Spring-Summer 2011 Ready-to-Wear collection.
