IN THE SHADOW OF THE EIFFEL TOWER

Under the glass roof of the Grand Palais, an Eiffel Tower stretches skywards. The iron girders of the two nineteenth-century monuments almost touch.

Guests stroll round the foot of the tower before sitting down on the green chairs typical of Paris gardens. The models parade along the pathways. The Haute Couture silhouettes are straight or cinched at the waist, flared or curved, and the tweeds, wools, and chiffons are autumnal in hue, in shades of bordeaux, green, and russet.

The top of the tower seems to vanish in the mist before the guests' eyes. Among those watching the show were Kristen Stewart, Katy Perry, Pharrell Williams, Caroline de Maigret and Sofia Coppola.
