CHANEL ERES
PRIVATE CO-BRANDING
BY KARL LAGERFELD

PRIVATE CO-BRANDING."

THE CAMELLIA

The camellia, a flower of stark simplicity and pure white, could not fail to charm Mademoiselle Chanel. It formed part of her private world: here scattered on Coromandel screens, it also appears in chandeliers or in bouquets with rock-crystal.
Prior to being the flower associated with demimondaines or dandies, the camellia symbolized purity and longevity in Asia. Gabrielle Chanel made it a symbol of her designs, featuring it here and there in every item of a woman’s wardrobe.

For the Spring-Summer collection, delicate and simplistic camellias and poppies punctuate little black dresses and are featured in a variety of colors to enhance the look of bags, decorate hair accessories or accentuate the waistline.

Crafted in the workshops of Lemarié, the camellias are hand-cut in the shape of a heart; the petals are then formed using a die cutter.

SIMONE VEIL IN CHANEL
1490 HOURS OF CRAFTSMANSHIP

Elegantly attired in a Chanel jacket with green embroidery designed specially for her by Karl Lagerfeld, Simone Veil, known internationally for her commitment to politics as well as to women’s and social rights and a highly popular figure in France, made a grand entrance at the official ceremony of the Académie Française on Thursday 18th March 2010. L'Académie Française was established in 1635 and is composed of forty members known as immortals who are the national authority of the French language in charge amongst others of the official dictionary.

Based on this sketch by Karl Lagerfeld, the jacket was tailored at the Chanel Ateliers before being sent to Maison Lesage for the finishing embroidery. It required 250 hours of workmanship, not to mention the 850 hours spent on the embroidery. The blouse and long skirt in silk crepe represented 210 and 180 hours of work respectively, making a total of 1490 hours of skilled work to create the garments worn by Simone Veil on this historic day on which she became the "sixth immortal" at the prestigious establishment.
