The Art Director of the House has always been inspired by the city that hosted several CHANEL's fashion shows and exhibitions.

In 2005, Karl Lagerfeld presented the Métiers d’art collection in the CHANEL boutique of 57th Street. Two years later, the Cruise collection was set at the Grand Central Station, an iconic Manhattan location. New Yorkers have also had the opportunity to discover Karl Lagerfeld's work through exhibitions organized in the city. In the fall of 2008, the ‘Mobile Art’ pavillion created by architect Zaha Hadid upon Karl Lagerfeld's invitation, stopped by in Central Park. In 2012, the traveling exhibition ‘The Little Black Jacket’ was presented in SoHo, highlighting the House's icon.

Whether set on the Fifth Avenue, in Harlem or Brooklyn, the city has also often served as a backdrop to the CHANEL campaigns under Karl Lagerfeld's lens. The endless streets, iron balconies, red brick façades, traffic lights and street signs — these elements have all nourished the creator's imagination, inspiring him to associate CHANEL with this urban landscape.

This year, the city of New York once again inspired him. The Paris-New York 2018/19 Métiers d’art collection will be unveiled at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on December 4th.
