Ho Tzu Nyen

Ho Tzu Nyen (geboren en woonachtig in Singapore) werkt met animatie, video, performance en installatie. Hij eigent zich mythen en historische verhalen toe en herschikt ze om de manieren waarop werkelijkheid en geschiedenis worden vormgegeven te onderzoeken.
Veel van zijn werk heeft betrekking op Singapore, een voormalige Britse kolonie die nu een multiculturele eilandstaat is. Vanuit Singapore is Ho mythen en historische verhalen uit andere culturen in Zuidoost-Azië en Oost-Azië in zijn werk gaan opnemen.
’De volgende fase van mijn artistieke werk is onbekend,’ zegt hij. ‘Maar ik duik er graag in met de grotere capaciteiten die deze prijs mogelijk heeft gemaakt.’
Ho vertegenwoordigde Singapore op de 54e editie van de Biënnale van Venetië. Daarnaast heeft hij solotentoonstellingen van zijn werk gehouden in het Toyota Municipal Museum of Art, Japan (2021), het Yamaguchi Centre for Arts and Media, Japan (2021), de Kunstverein Hamburg, Duitsland (2018), het Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spanje (2015) en in het Mori Art Museum, Tokio (2012).
Een overzichtstentoonstelling, getiteld Ho Tzu Nyen: Time & the Tiger, die twee decennia van zijn werk omvat, werd in 2023 geopend in het Singapore Art Museum. De tentoonstelling gaat dit jaar op tournee naar het Art Sonje Center in Seoul en het Hessel Museum of Art in New York voordat ze in 2025 naar het Mudam Contemporary Art Museum in Luxemburg gaat. Hij heeft ook een solotentoonstelling, getiteld A for Agents, die in april 2024 opent in het Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo.
’De CHANEL Next Prize heeft me sterker gemaakt,’ zegt hij. ‘Het heeft me aangemoedigd om in actie te komen voor de volgende stap.’
