In 2012, CHANEL began a research program devoted to the study of the skin's ageing mechanism in collaboration with Prof. Grillari, an international expert in the field from the University of Vienna.
The program is based on the analysis of 6,000 women's faces from all over the world and maps the signs of ageing with the help of 2D and 3D reconstructed skin models. CHANEL Research conducted extensive testing in search of powerful anti-ageing active ingredients, which led it to discover the effects of red camellia extract on stage N°1 of skin ageing.
Infused with this extract, the products(1) in the N°1 DE CHANEL line prevent and correct the appearance of the 5 signs of ageing. Day after day, skin is visibly smoother and firmer, and its comfort is restored. Pores are refined. The complexion's radiance is renewed. Skin is left with a youthful glow.

THE POWER OF RED CAMELLIA
The discovery of red camellia ‘The Czar’ extract is the result of 17 years of research focused on the most emblematic CHANEL flower.
Red camellia extract is extraordinarily rich in protocatechuic acid, a molecule belonging to the polyphenol family that is known for its antioxidant properties.
THE N°1 DE CHANEL DIFFERENCE
At the core of the N°1 DE CHANEL line, red camellia extract, an ingredient with revitalising properties, prevents and corrects the appearance of the 5 signs of ageing.
Immediately after application, skin feels healthier (+30%(1)) and better protected from external aggressors (+32%(1)).
The appearance of wrinkles is reduced.
Skin's elasticity is improved.
(1)Self-assessment completed immediately after use, 78 women. (2)Clinical evaluation after one month of use, 29 women.
GAUJACQ, A PLACE OF EXPLORATION
In 1998, CHANEL established an open-sky laboratory in Gaujacq, a town in Southwest France, and devoted it entirely to conducting research and studying camellias from all over the world.
The CHANEL open-sky laboratory in Gaujacq comprises 40 hectares of land used for conducting research and studying camellias. It is managed based on the principles of agroecology and agroforestry in order to preserve local biodiversity.
Researchers in Gaujacq work with the camellias in an ecosystem that provides unique conditions for observation, study, and innovation.
It is an incubator of innovation where numerous ingredients have been derived from the iconic flower, including an oil, ceramides, water, yeast extract, and extract. It is also where researchers discovered the exceptional role red camellia plays in targeting senescence, a mechanism behind skin ageing.
A centre for research in experimental farming that opens up new possibilities in the field of beauty.
