Manufacture of watch cases

La Chaux-de-Fonds in Switzerland, at an altitude of 1,000 meters, is home to the world's highest concentration of activities connected to Haute Horlogerie. It is entirely appropriate, therefore, that CHANEL's watchmaking workshops are at La Chaux-de-Fonds, in the heart of this "Watch Valley"

From design to final assembly, the CHANEL teams draw, design, fashion, cut, mold, polish, assemble, adjust and regulate all watch components, including certain mechanical components in the famous J12 high-tech ceramic cases.

High-tech ceramic

CHANEL has mastered the savoir-faire of high-tech ceramic.
Made from the zirconium dioxide powder and yttrium, ceramic has exceptional properties:

Highly resistant to scratches. The hardness index of high-tech ceramic is 9 out of 10 on the Mohs scale, while that of diamond is 10. Only diamonds can therefore be used to fashion, sculpt and polish each component.
Non-oxidizing.
Inert to chemical agents.
Elevated refraction index. A unique brilliance enhanced by diamond powder polishing.

From intense black to immaculate white, high-tech ceramic has been transformed into a precious material, revolutionizing the rules of watchmaking.

The precise gestures of a jeweler

The excellence of gem-setting in CHANEL watches is assured by the CHANEL workshops in La Chaux-de-Fonds.

The ultimate grande complication

The Rétrograde Mystérieuse is a concentrated dose of innovation, bringing together complications and world première:

A tourbillon
A digital minutes display
A retrograde minutes hand
A 10-day power reserve
A retractable vertical crown

This perfectly round watch with a 47mm diameter has been designed without a side crown to ensure maximum comfort on the wrist. The design and production of this watchmaking feat are the work of Giulio Papi and his teams.
