Since the 1920's, Gabrielle Chanel adopted the camellia as one of her favorite accessories, worn as a brooch on her shoulder or as an ornament in her hair. Inspired by the contemporary male wardrobe, her fondness for the curved form of the camellia was borrowed from the fashionable gentlemen of the previous century. At the time, men preferred the camellia as a boutonniere because of its absence of smell. For the same reason, Mademoiselle Chanel favored the androgynous flower; having no scent, it did not conflict with her perfume, the legendary N°5.
Above all else, however, it was the camellia's beauty and natural elegance that led Mademoiselle Chanel to make it an iconic signature. Almost perfectly round and without thorns, it retains its leaves throughout the seasons, a rare trait that has rendered it a symbol of purity and longevity.
In her apartment at 31 rue Cambon, the reoccurring motif of its petals graced her Coromandel screens, lamps, mirrors, and was sculpted as a bouquet in rock crystal. Sumptuous in its simplicity, the white flower she chose as an icon has been a recurrent theme throughout Chanel's history.
